Everyone Should Try the Neon Makeup Trend — Here’s How

Thanks to trend arbiters like the NYFW runways and the latest Fenty Beauty makeup collection, our editors already had a hunch that this summer would be all about neon makeup. Whether it’s electric blue liner or Barbie pink gloss, neon is always vibrant and surprising, so it’s only fitting that for 2019’s Met Gala themed Camp: Notes on Fashion, celebrities opted for the best and brightest neon makeup we’ve seen on the red carpets this season. Makeup artists rose to the occasion with hot-pink lipstick, strategically placed eyeliner, and eyebrow colors that in no way exist in…

Dietary fats entering the brain may explain link between obesity and depression: Mouse study

Obesity and depression have long been linked, with previous clinical studies finding an association between these two conditions. However, until now, the mechanisms of how obesity affects depression and vice versa have not been fully understood. Now, in a new study led by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with the Gladstone Institutes, and published today in Translational Psychiatry, scientists have been able to demonstrate the links between the consumption of diets high in saturated fats that lead to obesity and the development of depression phenotypes. They have also found that…

Keto diet has potential in military, researchers say

A new study has researchers hopeful that a ketogenic diet could prove useful in the military, where obesity is an ongoing challenge, both in terms of recruiting soldiers and keeping them fit for service. The Ohio State University study included 29 people, most of whom were members of the campus ROTC. For three months, 15 of the participants followed a ketogenic diet and a comparison group of 14 peers ate their normal diet. Ketogenic diets are low in carbohydrates and emphasize moderate consumption of protein, with fat consumed to satiety.…

Scientists grow precursors for human pigment cells

Our hair, skin and eyes are colored by a pigment called melanin, which is produced by pigment cells called melanocytes. Scientists have used stem cell technology to successfully create melanocyte precursor cells. These cells can be used in research on melanoma and other pigment cell-related illnesses. The findings were published on March 6 in the online edition of Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research. Abnormalities in pigment cells can affect us in many ways, from genetic disorders such as albinism to freckles caused by aging. When melanocytes become malignant melanoma they cause…

Mathematical framework explores how the brain keeps a beat

A new mathematical model demonstrates how neurons in the brain could work together to learn and keep a musical beat. The framework, developed by Amitabha Bose of New Jersey Institute of Technology and Aine Byrne and John Rinzel of New York University, is described in PLOS Computational Biology. Many experimental studies have established which brain areas are active when a person listens to music and discerns a beat. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying the brain’s ability to learn a beat–and then keep it after the music stops–are unknown. Bose and his…
