Fat cell discovery could help combat obesity-related health issues

Researchers have discovered differences in fat cells that could potentially identify people predisposed to metabolic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver disease. The world-first discovery also identified ‘fast burning’ fat cells that if unlocked might help people lose weight. About 70 per cent of Australians are overweight or obese, which has been linked to metabolic disease risk. The University of Melbourne, Australia, research found that an individual’s level of risk might depend upon the type of fat they store. Published in Cell Reports, the study took samples from human volunteers…

Pigment-producing stem cells can regenerate vital part of nervous system

Neurodegenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) affect millions of people worldwide and occur when parts of the nervous system lose function over time. Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have discovered that a type of skin-related stem cell could be used to help regenerate myelin sheaths, a vital part of the nervous system linked to neurodegenerative disorders. The discovery into these types of stem cells is significant because they could offer a simpler and less invasive alternative to using embryonic stem cells. This early stage research…

Chatterbox parents may boost tots’ intelligence

Researchers have found that young children who are exposed to large amounts of adult speech tend to have better cognitive skills. The major new study, led by researchers at the University of York, identified a link between kids who heard high quantities of adult speech and their nonverbal abilities such as reasoning, numeracy and shape awareness. The researchers gained unprecedented insight into the secret lives of pre-schoolers by fitting tiny audio recorders into the clothing of children aged two to four. The experiences of 107 children and their interactions with…

How to combine ‘leg day’ with running

James Cook University scientists in Australia say they have the solution for a problem gym-goers have when they combine endurance and weight training. JCU’s Dr Kenji Doma led the review paper. He said his own work and those of other scientists had previously discovered that resistance training, such as weight lifting, may harm performance in endurance training, such as running, when the two are combined on the same or separate days. The practice of combining the two is commonly referred to as ‘concurrent training’. “Based on previous evidence, we suspect…
