Fashion rule-breaking—events like the Met Gala are just another day in the life of Emily Ratajkowski. Add a naked dress, and things begin to feel even more familiar for the It-girl, whose body is so enviable it deserves a red (or pink) carpet all its own.
In full Emrata form, the model/actress arrived to the Met Gala in a halter-necked custom Dundas dress with a full bodice cut-out, open back, and a sheer silhouette, complete with a small train. The gown sparkled from head-to-toe, including the wing headpiece she paired the look with, which included strands of crystals draped from ear-to-ear.
While at first one can only let their jaw hit the floor and simply covet the face, the body, and the confidence that Ratajkowski exudes, this look (at second glance) is an ode to the queen of Camp herself, Cher. Emrata seemed to channel a few notes from Cher’s signature styles from her days working with Bob Mackie on her red carpet and performance looks, including the barely-there bodice and the angel wing headpiece. Mackie, a tentpole in the history of camp’s place in fashion, is serving on the board of this year’s Gala.
The Met Gala theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, is an ode to all things over the top, extra, and avant garde—while having loads of fun doing it—has paved the way for some major fashion moments on this Met Gala red carpet, including Kacey Musgraves arriving as a literal Barbie in Moschino and a hot pink convertible, and Zendaya arriving as Cinderella (complete with glass slippers).
While others paid homage to thought-leaders in the world of Camp, like Ciara’s Diana Ross inspired hair and Ryan Murphy’s Liberace-inspired cape, few attempted to channel the icon that is Cher. Unlike many, Emrata has the fashion chops (and the body) to do it, with the help of Peter Dundas.
