WHAT ARE FACIAL EXTRACTIONS — AND DO YOU ACTUALLY NEED THEM?

So you’re getting a much-needed facial and it’s time for the extraction part of your appointment. Don’t get us wrong — there’s nothing like a successful post-extraction facial, but that’s not to say we look forward to the process. As we’re laying there bracing ourselves for the discomfort that’s sure to come with each poke, we often find ourselves asking if they’re really necessary for clear skin. If you’re anything like us — or maybe you’re new to facials in general (if so, welcome!) — we’re here to assure you that despite the potential pain, extractions are worth it. We slid into the DMs of board-certified dermatologist and skincare.com consultant Rita Linker, MD, to explain why. Here’s what she had to say about facial extractions.

WHAT ARE FACIAL EXTRACTIONS — AND ARE THEY NECESSARY?

“A facial extraction is when you clear a clogged pore or comedone from the skin,” explains Dr. Linker. “Facial extractions are great if you are acne prone. Comedone extractors are used with precision to open up congestion in a way that is delicate and leaves no evidence of scarring. I recommend that my oily clients do this monthly to clean out their pores. I also do a light glycolic peel after extractions to help brighten the skin and control oil production.”

READY TO TAKE THE FACIAL EXTRACTION PLUNGE?

Our biggest piece of advice is to find a reputable professional if you feel like you and your skin can benefit from facial extractions. Do not attempt to extract anything on your own, walk straight past that too good-to-be-true cheap facial shop on your local street corner and seek out a reputable dermatologist or esthetician. If you want at-home glycolic treatment, however, we can help with that; check out the SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight cream.
