While we love a trip to the nail salon just as much as the next beauty lover, it’s important to make sure you’re still giving your nails the care they need at home, too. That means cuticle oil deserves a prime spot in your nail polish collection, right alongside a quality hand lotion that you should apply daily. If you’re doing these things (or at least you are now) and you’re still noticing that your cuticles are dry and peeling, chances are, there’s a solid reason why it’s happening.
“Natural nails should be treated just like any part of your skin-care routine to maintain the integrity of the nails,” explains celebrity manicurist, Elle (a..k.a. @enamelle on Instagram). That includes the way you groom them, how often you get them done and even how you protect them from the environment. Ahead, Elle offers some helpful insight into why your cuticles might be peeling.
REASON 1: FILING IMPROPERLY
First, make sure you’re filing your nails correctly, as this is a super-common mistake. “Make sure to always use a light grit or a glass file and file in one direction,” explains Elle. “Your nails are layered, so sawing back and forth can pick up the layers of the nail.”
REASON 2: OVER-BUFFING
There’s no need to buff your nails frequently, and when you do it, make sure that it’s with a super-fine grit nail buffer. “Over-buffing on the top of the nail can cause nails to peel. Just like hair, when you destroy the protective layer, you get splits.”
REASON 3: PROLONGED NAIL ENHANCEMENTS
How long have you had that manicure of yours? “Prolonged nail enhancements like gel nails, acrylics and even polish can cause peeling,” says Elle. “Once your polish starts to chip, take it off. And don’t peel it off. Wearing nail enhancements for too long can cause the nail to dehydrate and go into a state of dilapidation.”
REASON 4: LACK OF MOISTURE
“Brittleness caused by aging or lack of moisture can also cause nails to peel,” says Elle. “Always use cuticle oil to hydrate your nail and keep it flexible and supple.” She recommends the KISS Manicovery Recovery Care Kit, which includes a hydrating cuticle oil, rejuvenating nail masks and a nourishing strengthening cream to keep your natural nails looking their best. We also love Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil to condition and protect.
REASON 5: SUN EXPOSURE
Ah, yes, this is another reminder to wear your sunscreen every single day. “Sun exposure (believe it or not) can also cause natural nails to peel. Your sunblock should always cover your cuticles and fingertips,” advises Elle. Make sure to mindfully apply and rub it into your cuticles.
