Taiwanese President to Meet With McCarthy Despite Threats From China

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has vowed to strengthen Joe Biden’s stance on China… using the 118th Congress to set federal policies that give him a “backbone” to deal with Beijing.

McCarthy Does More Action than Biden

In an interview with Fox News, the California Republican said he plans to approve measures on a bipartisan basis… to ensure that Beijing “understands we mean business.” McCarthy said he wants to “empower the president,” as unity in Congress would give him “a stronger hand.”

McCarthy warned that although Biden has a good rapport with Xi Jinping, the situation has changed. China believes that they are stronger than before.

The House Speaker believes that Biden should focus on tackling the issue of fentanyl… by pressuring Xi to stop the drug from coming into America.

McCarthy said the US had “done this before with Xi and fentanyl got curbed very quickly.” The congressman added that he created a bipartisan House Select Committee on China for the 118th Congress to focus on areas where China has tried to take dominance…

McCarthy also criticized the Biden administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that officials “look weak to China.”

McCarthy urged Congress to speak in one voice against China. He said, “If we can lay the barriers out with united Republicans and Democrats… it puts the hardline against China so that they understand we mean business.”

McCarthy to Meet Taiwanese President to Avoid Conflict

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is planning a visit to the US for a series of meetings with US officials. This includes House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Tsai’s visit to the US and particularly her planned meeting with McCarthy has drawn intense backlash from the People’s Republic of China…

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has stated that they are:

  • Gravely concerned about the situation
  • Have demanded clarification

However, Taiwan responded by saying that the mainland has “no right” to weigh in on the diplomatic meeting.

Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, is an island nation off the coast of the mainland. Taiwan has declared itself independent of the People’s Republic of China. Moreover, they claimed the continuation of governance from pre-revolutionary China.

The People’s Republic of China has long claimed sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait – the relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland…

The Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Qin Gang, warned that the US and China are heading for “conflict and confrontation” due to American cooperation with Taiwan.

Qin has stated that such competition is a reckless gamble. The stakes are the fundamental interests of the two peoples and even the future of humanity.

President Tsai’s visit to the US is expected. It would include a meeting with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy… which is a diplomatic event that echoes former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island.

The situation has been deemed “incompatible with peace and stability” by China, but Taiwan has stated that China has no right to interfere in its diplomatic meetings with other countries…
